Seeking professional dental care as soon as possible could make the difference to save your tooth. What is root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, is a procedure used to save a tooth that has an infected, inflamed, or dead dental pulp. The dental pulp consists of the nerve and blood supply within the tooth, and when compromised, it can cause severe pain and potential tooth loss.
Signs you may need root canal treatment:
- Severe toothache when biting or chewing
- Sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures that remains even after the heat or cold has been removed
- Darkening or discoloration of the affected tooth
- Swollen and tender gums around the tooth
- Presence of pus or a pimple-like bump around the gum near the tooth
- Swelling of the face or neck area
- Loosening of the affected tooth
Comprehensive root canal consultations
When you visit Complete Dental Works for a root canal consultation, our experienced dentists will thoroughly examine your tooth and its surrounding structures. We’ll assess the condition of the dental pulp and determine if root canal treatment is necessary and appropriate for your oral health.
During the consultation, we will:
Conduct a comprehensive examination: We will comprehensively examine your tooth, considering your dental history and any symptoms you may be experiencing. We may also utilise dental imaging technology, such as X-rays, to acquire a clear image of the root structure of the tooth.
Provide a personalised treatment plan: Based on our assessment, we will develop a tailored treatment plan that outlines the recommended course of action. If root canal treatment is required, we will discuss the procedure in detail, addressing your concerns or questions.
Discuss alternatives and options: In some cases, alternative treatments or options may be available. If applicable, we will discuss these alternatives and assist you in making an informed decision about your oral health.
Root canal procedure
Establishing access and identifying the pulp space: With utmost care, your dentist creates minimal access to the pulp while preserving as much tooth structure as possible. This allows them to safely reach the infected or inflamed pulp.
Cleaning the pulp space: Your dentist thoroughly cleans the pulp space using an endodontic file, removing infected or inflamed tissue, bacteria, and debris. This step is essential for preventing the spread of infection and ensuring your tooth’s long-term health.
Sealing the dental pulp space: After cleaning the pulp space, your dentist will seal it to prevent recontamination. This step, known as canal obturation, involves filling the canals with a biocompatible material (gutta-percha) and sealing the tooth.
